Tell us a little more about you and your story.
My entrepreneurial journey began at a young age when I sold personalized greeting cards door-to-door at age 11. My first official business, PKstrong, offered personalized athletic apparel. It was a company I launched in honor of my late Stepfather who I lost to cancer. That particular journey was very therapeutic for me, but I also learned a lot as a new business owner. Many mistakes and many successes. In the end, I decided to close down. With an MBA under my belt, my next venture started as a small marketing consulting gig that soon formed what is now The Start Studio. (My background out of college was working at marketing agencies with large brands like MGM, Caribou and Purina.) This boutique agency is what I’ve run for the last 6+ years and has allowed me to work with clients all over the country on their business, brand and marketing. But my heart has always been with female entrepreneurs who are just starting a new business. I wanted to take all my lessons and experiences and build more of a method to the entrepreneurial madness. To form somewhat of a step-by-step process, to help women stay focused and keep their business planning on track. This is where The Launch Planner was born.
How did your business come about?
While running my marketing agency, I was “in talks” with a large brand packaging firm in Chicago who worked with large international companies and wanted to partner with me. After nearly a year of discussing the potential partnership deal and soon before making things official, I was driving in my car one day and told myself it was OK to say no. I knew in my heart that what I truly wanted to do was reach a broad audience of women in some way. So that week, I made a tough phone call to turn down the deal. Instead, I booked a “business retreat” with myself in a local hotel for 24 hours. I took all my notes, magazine clip outs, doodles, etc. in a big box. What I walked away with was the beginning seeds of this business.
